The 49X was designed from the ground up, that includes new under the hood accessibility and components.
New hood latching allows for easier opening of the hood and protects the rear latches. The prominent pull handle and easy opening eliminates the need to stand on the bumper when opening the hood. All radiators are now aluminium and grille mounted and come standard with a front rock guard. All filters and fluids are positioned for efficient maintenance and in turn, less downtime. A large rain train directs rain and snow melt from the roof, windshield and hood to under the cab which reduces cab leaks and protects the front wall.
The 49X cooling package is engine mounted and easily removable for maintenance. Single gear steering system is available up to 16K lbs on set forward-axles and 18K lbs on set back axles. The dual steering gear is 17lbs lighter that the 4900 heavy duty steering gear. External air cleaners are not available on the 49X, instead an under-hood intake system is used and is 57 lbs lighter than the dual can system. This system has optional hood integrated pre-cleaners and snow doors to reduce engine damage. In order to save frame space and protect the air dryer, there is a dedicated location for this component on the passenger side. For safety reasons, Western Star has added a hood strut with a standard lock that prevents unintentional closing.
The 49X has been built to withstand the harshest conditions while remaining an easily serviceable truck.
